The Jean Lyons School of Music offers enrichment programs designed to deepen students' musical knowledge while building community and fostering companionship through shared learning experiences.

Piano Ensemble
  • Open to students of all ages with classes for junior, intermediate, and advanced levels
  • Students are paired with a partner of the same level.
  • Follow in the footsteps of Lyons Quatuor Piano, our international, award-winning ensemble.
  • Experience the joy of collaborating with other pianists in concerts, competitions, or casual music-making.
Masterclasses
  • Learn from renowned teachers and performing artists.
  • Designed for students preparing for:
    • Higher-level exams and diplomas
    • Major competitions
  • Gain valuable insights by observing peers in a masterclass setting.
School Contests
  • Contests of different themes with guest judges including, Canadian Composer Lorna Paterson
  • Receive invaluable instruction and suggestions for improvement
  • “Musical Fitness” Contests
    • Motivate students for the technical aspects of RCM examinations.
Virtual Music Festival
  • Annual Virtual Music Festival held each Spring since 2021
  • Open to all students, from beginners to advanced. With classes for every level, even our youngest learners can participate.
  • A guest adjudicator provides feedback and awards certificates, with special scholarships for standout performances.
  • Following the festival, scholarship recipients are invited to perform in a showcase concert.
Sight Reading Classes

Our Sight Reading classes are designed to make sight reading fun! Through different topics each class, students gain skills to improve their sight reading ability, combining practical techniques and engaging activities, in a fun group setting.


Topics may include: 

  • Understanding the big picture: musical periods, styles, analysis, rhythm, dynamics, and fingering
  • Developing continuity in sight reading
  • Reading lead sheets and chord symbols (an RCM sight reading option)
  • Preparing for sight reading in exams and using pre-playing time effectively
  • Duets, ensemble playing, and, yes—pizza parties!
